Barb Buchan, shown after winning the Pursuit at this year's National Championships, broke a world record Wednesday in Aigle.

AIGLE, Switzerland - Karissa Whitsell (Springfield, Ore.) and Katie Compton (Colorado Springs, Colo.) raced to a second silver medal, and Barb Buchan (Bend, Ore.) set a new world record in the CP3 class as track competition came to a end Wednesday at the 2006 IPC Cycling World Championships in Aigle, Switzerland.

For Whitsell and Compton, it was their second medal in as many days. This one came in the 3,000-meter Individual Pursuit, where they finished second to Australia's Lindy Hou and Toireasa Gallagher, who finished strong in the last kilometer to win gold.

"All of our riders have performed very well so far," U.S. Paralympics Cycling head coach Craig Griffin said. "It's a testament to all the hard work our athletes have put in, which has shown in the number of personal best times they've put up this week. It also shows that the program we've put in place to prepare them for Beijing is paying off."

Buchan set a world record in the Women's 500m Time Trial with a time of 49.916 seconds, but finished seventh in an event that also included athletes from the LC3 and LC4 classes. Allison Jones (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was one of those athletes, and her time of 47.716 was good enough for fourth place.

After an off-day on Thursday, competition will resume on the road Friday morning with the men's and women's handcycling Individual Time Trial. U.S. athletes to watch will be Alejandro Albor (Elk Grove, Calif.), Monica Bascio (Evergreen, Colo.), Greg Hockensmith (Tucson, Ariz.), Oscar Sanchez (San Diego, Calif.) and Matt Updike (Denver, Colo.).
