TREXLERTOWN, Pa. - On a hot, humid day at the Lehigh Valley Velodrome in Trexlertown, Pa., Barb Buchan (CP3, Bend, Ore.) and Dan Nicholson (CP3, Richmond, Va.) cut through the heavy air to finish at the top of the podium in the women's and men's track time trial, respectively, at the 2006 U.S. Paralympics Cycling National Championships Friday.
Buchan, who won the silver medal in Wednesday's road time trial, where the course was a challenging 17.7 km, completed 500m in 52.3 seconds.
"I'm still tired from the [road] time trial, but it worked out," Buchan said.
Like the road event, the national champions on the track were determined by taking each racer's time and measuring it against the U.S. Paralympics Elite Team Standard for the racer's disability classification. Buchan, who was one of two women to beat the Elite Standard, finished with 97.2 percent of her standard (53.8).
The other woman to beat the Elite Standard: Allison Jones (Colorado Springs, Colo.), who was coming off a gold-medal performance at the 2006 Paralympic Games in Torino, Italy. She finished the LC3 500m in 49.8 seconds, 98.4 percent of her standard (50.6).
"It was actually pretty surprising," Jones said. "I was just hoping to beat 50, not realizing what my standard was, and then doing that 49 was pretty good. I'm really happy with what I did today."
Nicholson, who did not compete in Wednesday's road event, completed his one-kilometer trial in 1:20.5, which nearly matched his Elite Standard (1:20.0) exactly.
"It was good up until the last two turns," Nicholson said. "I thought everything went perfect and then the anchor came out. I finished two and-a-half seconds better than a month ago."
When asked about the chance to compete in the World Championships this fall, Nicholson said he looks forward to the opportunity.
"Every year, as you get closer to the end of your career, it means more," Nicholson said. "I really like my chances of winning one more world championship before it's all over."
U.S. Paralympics Cycling National Team head coach Craig Griffin (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was pleased again today with the performances of the athletes.
"The times were very quick today," Griffin said. "Maybe a little bit faster than expected. I'm happy with not only the athletes who won and medaled, but also we had some very good signs of developmental athletes that are going to do well. From a coaching standpoint, and a development and depth standpoint, I'm very excited for the athletes underneath who did not win."
The National Championships will conclude tomorrow morning with the pursuit races.
