Three U.S. powerlifters turned in strong efforts Saturday at the 2007 American Open IPC Championships, held in conjunction with the 2007 American Open Weighlifting Championships in Birmingham, Ala. The event served as the final opportunity for the U.S. athletes to earn points toward their world rankings before the list of 2008 Paralympic Games competitors is announced on March 24.

Kortney Clemons (University Park, Pa.) had a rough day in powerlifting today at the 2007 Parapan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil not posting a score after failing to make a qualified opening lift of 152.5kg. Clemons made three attempts at the weight which he has done many times in practice before, but it wasn’t meant to be today, but Clemons will live to lift another day.

Two-time U.S. Paralympian Mary Stack (Ann Arbor, Mich.) finished fourth in today’s women’s heavyweight open category of powerlifting at the 2007 Parapan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Stack easily pressed her opening lift of 110kg, but was not marked for her second attempt at 115kg and her third attempt at 117.5kg due to technical problems with her lifts. Had she made a successful third lift, she would have won the bronze medal.more...
