Young U.S. Swimmers Break Records on Final Day of U.S. Paralympics Open Swimming Championships

Competition concluded Saturday night at the 2007 U.S. Paralympics Open Swimming Championships with three young U.S. Elite and National Team athletes continuing to improve on their existing records at the University of Maryland's Eppley Recreation Center. Kate Gibbs took more than seven seconds off her previous best time in the S9 200m butterfly, while Roy Perkins and Cortney Jordan continued to cut time in the S5 100m free and S7 100m backstroke, respectively.

Three U.S. swimmers broke their own world records twice Friday to highlight day two of the U.S. Paralympics Open Swimming Championships at the University of Maryland’s Eppley Recreation Center. Rudy Garcia-Tolson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Riverside, Calif.), Jarrett Perry (Colorado Springs, Colo./Wichita, Kan.) and Roy Perkins (Del Mar, Calif.) each cut time from their existing records in the SM7 200m individual medley, S9 200m backstroke and S5 50m butterfly, respectively.

Day one of the U.S. Paralympics Open Swimming Championships concluded Thursday at the University of Maryland’s Eppley Recreation Center, highlighted by a world-record performance in the morning and two excellent races during the evening finals. Cortney Jordan (Henderson, Nev.) ended the morning on a high note with a new world-best time in the S7 800m freestyle of 11:36.43, smashing the old mark by more than 24 seconds.

U.S. Paralympics and the University of Maryland will host the 2007 U.S. Paralympics Open Swimming Championships, Dec. 6-8 at the Eppley Recreation Center in College Park, Md. Approximately 260 physically disabled athletes from 16 countries will compete at the event, including all members of the U.S. Paralympics Swimming Elite and National Teams. U.S. Paralympics Swimming head coach Julie O'Neill says the deep international field should factor in to some strong races during three-day event.
