U.S. Wheelchair Curling Team Wins First-Ever Medal at 2008 World Championship

Skip Augusto Perez led Team USA to its first-ever medal by defeating Canada, 8-1, Saturday morning to capture the bronze at the 2008 World Wheelchair Curling Championship. Perez and teammates James Pierce, James Joseph and Jacqueline Kapinowski took the lead in the third end with a deuce and didn't let up after that. A steal of two in the fourth end was bolstered by a huge fifth end for the Americans to seal the win.

Team USA will play for bronze after losing to Norway in this morning's playoff match, 5-3, at the 2008 World Wheelchair Curling Championship. Augusto Perez and teammates James Pierce, James Joseph and Jacqueline Kapinowski will play the loser of the semifinal match between Canada and Norway in Saturday morning's bronze medal game. The Americans are on a quest to bring home the first medal for the U.S. at this event.

Team USA is headed to its first-ever playoff game at the 2008 World Wheelchair Championship. Augusto Perez (East Syracuse, N.Y.) and teammates James Pierce (North Syracuse, N.Y.), James Joseph (New Hartford, N.Y) and Jacqueline Kapinowski (Point Pleasant, N.J.) defeated Italy's Andrea Tabanelli rink, 6-4, in Thursday morning's tiebreaker game to earn the final playoff spot and the No. 4 seed.

The Americans are still hanging on in the playoff race at the 2008 World Wheelchair Curling Championship. Augusto Perez (East Syracuse, N.Y.) and teammates James Pierce (North Syracuse, N.Y.), James Joseph (New Hartford, N.Y) and Jacqueline Kapinowski (Point Pleasant, N.J.) improved to 4-4 this morning with a 6-2 win over Russia's Andrey Smirnov. With the win, the Americans are tied for fifth place with Sweden. Korea and Canada have already secured semifinal berths.
