2007-08 Season Preview: U.S. Disabled Ski Team Focused on More Podiums

On the heels of a season that garnered the U.S. Disabled Ski Team four World Cup titles, Program Director Sandy Metzger says there's room for more in 2008. Stephani Victor, who led the alpine team with three titles, is back on snow and feeling solid after a summer of injury recovery. On the cross-country side, third-year veteran Chris Klebl is hungry for an upgrade after collecting eight second-place finishes en route to runner-up in the overall World Cup chase last winter.

Stephani Victor, Laurie Stephens and Chris Klebl headline a group of 15 Paralympians named to the 2008 U.S. Disabled Ski Team by Program Director Sandy Metzger. The Team accounted for 12 victories and 18 other World Cup podiums last winter. "We have so many solid athletes returning this season like Victor, Stephens, and Klebl," said Metzger. "It's encouraging to see such a talented pack of athletes. No doubt we'll be challenging at every level again this season."

Paralympic and World Championships gold medalist and former World Cup champion Steve Cook (Salt Lake City, Utah), who was the cornerstone of the U.S. Disabled Cross Country Ski Team for the better part of a decade, has retired, announced U.S. Disabled Program Director Sandy Metzger. Cook began cross-country skiing in 1995 as a cross-training method and rapidly surged to the top of the sport, garnering seven Paralympic medals and a World Cup title in 2005.

Following two days of testing with the U.S. Ski Team Sport Science Dept. in Park City, the U.S. Disabled Cross Country Team heads into summer with the goal of building the most efficient training programs possible. Facilitated by Team Physiologist Justin Carlstrom and Jim Walker, Ph.D, of The Orthopedic Specialty Hospital (TOSH) in Salt Lake City, athletes underwent lactate tests, traditionally used to map the relationship between heart rate, speed and lactate.
