Stephanie Wheeler Blog - U.S. Women's Wheelchair Basketball
by Stephanie Wheeler / June 26, 2008
My name is Stephanie Wheeler and I am on the US Women's Wheelchair Basketball team. Hopefully by reading this blog, throughout time, you will learn a little about me (my training and what motivates me), a little about wheelchair basketball, and a little about the Paralympics as a whole. First a little about me...I am a gold medal winner from the Athens 2004 games. It was the first gold medal a US women's wheelchair basketball team had won in international competition since 1988, so it was a huge honor to be on that team. I grew up in North Carolina, a very sport rich state, so I have been into sports my entire life. I was paralyzed in a car accident when I was 6 years old, and I have been in a wheelchair ever since. And since the day I discovered wheelchair basketball, I have been hooked.
Wheelchair basketball has probably been one of the greatest things to ever come into my life. It allowed me to play college basketball on scholarship at the University of Illinois and at the University of Alabama and it has allowed me to travel this country and around the world. Right now I am training hard for the Paralympics in Beijing this September. In future blogs, I will go into more detail about my training regimen, what motivates me, and what the Paralympics are all about....so I hope you all enjoy the blog and you learn a little as well!!!
