FENCING: Junior Olympic Championships in Hartford
// Cindy Bent Findlay // January 6, 2006
USFA Junior Olympic Fencing Championships come to Hartford The United States Fencing Association's Junior Olympic Fencing Championships will be hosted at the Connecticut Convention Center in downtown Hartford, Connecticut, February 17-20, 2006. Nearly 2000 of the nation's best Under-20 and Under-17 fencers will compete in foil, épée and saber. Most of the members of the 2005 Junior World Championships teams are scheduled to compete, plus members of the 2005 Senior World Championship gold-medal women’s saber team. This is an excellent opportunity to see some of the world's finest athletes and Olympic hopefuls in competition. Last year's event in Arlington, Texas, drew fencers from states from Alaska to Hawaii, plus families and coaches. An even larger turnout is expected this year, bringing as many as 4,000 visitors to the downtown Hartford area for the four-day weekend. In addition to vying for the title of Junior Olympic Champion, fencers will try to earn spots on 2006 Junior and Cadet World Championship teams to compete in April in Taebeck City, South Korea. The JO competitions are the final domestic opportunity for fencers to earn points toward selection. The public is invited to attend all events free of charge. All of Hartford is invited to come take part in one of the continent's premier sporting events.
