Keddie, Ferguson Win National High School Titles

St. Louis, Mo. – The 2005 Wilson 18th USA Racquetball (USAR) National High School Championships presented by Penn Racquet Sports concluded Sunday with Mike Keddie (Memorial – Manchester, N.H.) and Katie Ferguson (Catlin Gabel – Portland, Ore.) winning boy’s and girl’s No.1 singles titles, respectively. With their wins, Keddie and Ferguson each earn one-year appointments to the U.S. Junior National Racquetball Team. More than 400 of the countries best racquetball players, representing 46 schools, competed in the event which was held at the Vetta Sports Club in St. Louis.

Keddie entered the tournament as the top seed and didn’t disappoint. He lost only one game en route to the final where he defeated Allan Crockett (Oak Mountain – Birmingham, Ala.), 15-7, 15-12. The win assures Keddie a spot on the U.S. Junior National Team, which he narrowly missed in June at the 2004 USAR Junior Olympic Championships.

Ferguson, on the other hand, came from virtually no where to claim the title. She was seeded No.6 and recorded upset victories over No.3 Sarah Hettesheimer (Mother of Mercy – Cincinnati, Ohio) and No.2 Kara Mazur (Miss Porter’s – Avon, Conn.) to earn a spot in the final against No.5 Shannon Inglesby (Lincoln – Portland, Ore.). Inglesby drew first blood by taking the first game of the final, 15-12. Ferguson regrouped to take the second game, 15-7, and then the tiebreaker, 11-9, for the win.

Brothers Chad and David LaForest (Xavier – Queen’s Village, N.Y.) teamed together to take the boy’s No.1 doubles title over Anthony Martin and Anthony Montanez (Copper Hills – West Jordan, Utah), 15-1, 11-15, 11-5. Inglesby was able to earn a gold medal by pairing with Annie Tzoneva (Lincoln – Portland, Ore.) to defeat Brandie Hanson and Ashley Willhite (Klamath Union – Klamath Falls, Ore.), 15-5,15-9, in the girl’s No.1 doubles final. In mixed No.1 doubles Sarah Moyle and Scott Rieders (Southridge – Beaverton, Ore.) defeated the brother/sister team of Gabrielle and Sampson Shnurman (Martinsdale-St. Mary’s – Prole, Iowa), 11-2,11-4.
