Hakkinen came up short in his first two Olympic bids. In the 1998 Games in Nagano, he was 17th in the relay. In the 2002 Salt Lake City Games, he registered the USA's top Olympic finish -- 13th in the pursuit. Hakkinen skied the third-fastest time and hit 18 of 20 targets but was one short of reaching the podium.
