Armstrong swept away any notion that his Tour would be incomplete without winning a stage by winning the individual time trial on the second to last day, beating Jan Ullrich by 23 seconds and extending his overall lead.

"I wasn't absolutely sure I could do it," Armstrong said. "So, pleasant surprise."
