Quarterfinal Competitors are Set at the 2007 National Golden Gloves
(CHATTANOOGA, TENN.) – A marathon session of preliminary bouts highlighted the third night of competition at the 2007 National Golden Gloves in Chattanooga, Tenn. Over 80 bouts were contested at the Chattanooga Convention Center with a berth in the quarterfinal round on the line. The light flyweight and flyweight divisions both made their 2007 Golden Gloves debut and the action did not disappoint.
While defending champion Luis Yanez (Duncanville, Texas) enjoyed a bye, five light flyweight division bouts were contested early in Wednesday’s action. Daniel Lozano (Bowling Green, Fla.) made a strong Golden Gloves debut in his first round contest with Hawaii’s Julian Belmontes. Lozano won a 5-0 decision over Belmontes to advance to the quarterfinal round and a bout with former junior champion Stephon Young (St. Louis, Mo.). Francisco Ibarra (Ft. Lupton, Colo.) took home his first win as well, winning a 5-0 decision over Gino Padilla (Las Vegas, Nev.). Ibarra will face off with Henry Clay in quarterfinal competition on Thursday.
The flyweight division made their first appearance at the 2007 Golden Gloves on Wednesday as well with six preliminary bouts. The last two flyweight division champions faced off in a preliminary round action with 2006 champion Aaron Alafa (Visalia, Calif.) and 2005 titlist Barry Dennis (St. Louis, Mo.) battling in a preliminary round contest. Alafa enjoyed the better of the action, winning a unanimous 5-0 decision over Dennis to advance on to quarterfinal competition and a bout with the U.S. Army’s John Franklin (Colorado Springs, Colo.). Chattanooga’s own Joseph Francisco won his first bout of the tournament in an action-packed contest with Juan Leija (Alvin, Texas). Francisco pulled out a 3-2 split decision win to move on to the quarterfinals where he will face Larry Tumlin (Washington DC). Tumlin put an early end to his first bout of the tournament, winning a stoppage victory at the :36 mark of the second round to advance to Thursday’s action.
In bantamweight action, 2006 Under 19 National Champion Jorge Diaz (New Brunswick, N.J.) grabbed his second victory of the 2007 Golden Gloves with a unanimous 5-0 decision over Jose Haro, Jr. (W. Valley City, Utah). Diaz’s win advances him to a quarterfinal match-up with Mercedes Manriquez (Houston, Texas). Manriquez won a 5-0 decision as well in a preliminary round match-up with Brian Battease (Honolulu, Hawaii). Ronny Rios (Santa Ana, Calif.) won his second bout of the tournament, defeating Derek Winston (Minneapolis, Minn.) by a 5-0 margin. Rios will battle Jessy Cruz (Miami, Fla.) in quarterfinal action on Thursday. Cruz won a unanimous decision over Kenny Anthony (Covington, Tenn.) to advance to the next round.
2004 National Golden Gloves champion Luis Del Valle (Newburgh, N.Y.) found himself in a battle in his second round contest with Ernesto Garza (Saginaw, Mich.). The duo both landed hard shots during the three round bout, but it was Del Valle who emerged victorious, winning a 5-0 decision over Garza. Del Valle will take on Prientkes Sanders (Charleston, W. Va.) in quarterfinal competition. Sanders grabbed his second win of the tournament with a 5-0 decision over Jose Saenz (Kansas City, Mo.). Nevada’s Bennie Tsosie won the lone featherweight stoppage in Wednesday’s action, stopping Tim Johnson (Toledo, Ohio) at the 1:34 mark of the third round to advance to quarterfinal action. He will face off with Raynell Williams (Cleveland, Ohio) on Thursday. Williams recorded a 5-0 decision over Rheno Nieto (Gulfport, Miss.) in second round action on Wednesday night to advance to quarterfinal night.
Defending champion Sadam Ali (Brooklyn, N.Y.) found himself in a dog-fight with New Jersey’s Michael Perez (Newark, N.J.). The two boxers traded blows from bell-to-bell with their respective teams cheering them from ringside. Yet only one boxer could emerge victorious and Ali pulled out a 3-2 win to advance to quarterfinal action and a bout with Devonte Allen (Cincinnati, Ohio). Allen enjoyed an easier night than Ali, winning a stoppage over Lance Williams (Muscatine, Iowa) at the 1:27 mark of the second round. 2005 U.S. Championships bronze medallist Stan Martyniouk (Antelope, Calif.) drew a tough foe in his second bout of the tournament, facing off with 2006 Under 19 National Champion Jerry Belmontes (Corpus Christi, Texas). The two battled in a close contest but Martyniouk came out with his second victory of the 2007 Golden Gloves, winning a 3-2 decision over Belmontes. Martyniouk will take on Archie Ray Marquez (Albuquerque, N.M.). in quarterfinal competition.
Two defending champions pulled out close victories in the light welterweight division. Two-time Golden Gloves titlist Jeremy Bryan (Clifton, N.J.) faced off with 2006 Junior Olympic champion Javier Molina (Los Angeles, Calif.) in a rematch of the 2007 Midwestern Trials. Once again, it was Bryan who came out with the victory, winning a 3-2 split decision victory. Bryan will face off with 2006 Under 19 National Andre Sherard (Milwaukee, Wis.) on Thursday. Sherard pulled out a 3-2 decision as well, defeating Michael Faragon (Schenectady, N.Y.). In other action, defending champion Brad Solomon (Douglasville, Ga.) boxed in a close contest of his own with Jamal James (Minneapolis, Minn,). Yet Solomon pulled out his own 3-2 victory to advance to the quarterfinals. He will challenge Joseph Llovet (Bay Shore, N.Y.) in the quarterfinal round. Llovet won a 5-0 decision over Xavier Burgos to earn a berth in the quarterfinal round.
Defending champion and two-time U.S. Championships gold medallist Demetrius Andrade (Providence, R.I.) made his 2007 Golden Gloves debut in a preliminary round match-up with Miguel Beltran (W. Jordan, Utah). Andrade’s opening bout was a successful one as he grabbed a 5-0 decision over Beltran to move one step closer to his second straight Golden Gloves championship. Andrade will face Jesse Lubash (Munhall, Pa.) on Thursday. Lubash won a 5-0 decision over Richard Williams (Norfolk, Va.) in second round action. Gregory Carter (Waterbury, Conn./NMU) won a crowd-pleaser with 2006 Under 19 National Champion William Jackson (Cincinnati, Ohio) in their welterweight preliminary contest. Carter recorded a 4-1 victory over Jackson to advance on to a quarterfinal date with Javonn Barnes (Muskegon, Mich.). Barnes won a 4-1 decision of his own, defeating Chicago’s Nathan Valenzuela in second round action.
In middleweight action, two-time junior Olympic national champion Dominic Wade (Largo, Md.) took the ring for the first time at an open division national tournament, battling Bryan Smith (Toledo, Ohio). Wade controlled the bout, stopping Smith at the 1:49 mark of the second round to advance on to a quarterfinal contest with Willie Monroe, Jr. (Rochester, N.Y.). Monroe won a 5-0 decision over Stepan Zeytunyan (Aurora, Colo.) in their second round bout to move on to the match-up with Wade. Orphius Waite (Chicago, Ill.) won his quarterfinal berth with a stoppage of Nicholas Swan (Great Falls, Mont.) just over a minute into the third round of action. Waite will battle Omar Henry (Houston, Texas) on Thursday. Henry advanced in the tournament with a 3-2 split decision win over William Clemons (Trotwood, Ohio).
2004 National Golden Gloves champion De’Rae Crane (Davenport, Iowa) made his 2007 Golden Gloves debut on Wednesday, facing off with James Lubash (Munhall, Pa.). Crane enjoyed a winning start, taking a 5-0 decision over Lubash in the preliminary contest. He will battle Dion Savage, Jr. (Flint, Mich.) in quarterfinal competition. Savage won a third round stoppage victory over Samuel Norwood (Oklahoma City, Okla.) at the 1:17 mark to advance on to quarterfinal action with Crane. Joshua Garza (Baytown, Texas) recorded his second win of the tournament in his preliminary bout with Isaiah McFadden (Phoenix, Ariz.). Garza earned a 4-1 decision over McFadden to move on to a quarterfinal match-up with 2005 National Champion William Rosinsky (Richmond Hills, N.Y.). Rosinsky won his second straight unanimous decision, defeating Rodney Ellison, Jr. (Cheyenne, Wyo.) by a 5-0 margin to move on in the tournament.
Heavyweight Anthony Tettis (Ridgway, Pa.) enjoyed a short night in his preliminary bout with Randy Johnson. Tettis stopped Johnson early in the second round to win a berth in quarterfinal action, where he will face Danny Calhoun (Cincinnati, Ohio). Calhoun won a unanimous decision over Tyrell Wright (Jersey City, N.J.) in their second round contest to advance to Thursday’s competition. David Imoesiri saw an early end to his preliminary bout as well, stopping Kari Bledsoe midway through the second round. Imoesiri will battle Isiah Thomas (Detroit, Mich.) in quarterfinal competition.
Eight super heavyweight contests completed the six-hour session at the Chattanooga Convention Center. Joe Hanks (E. Orange, N.J.) looked to speed up the action in his bout with Donovan Dennis (Davenport, Iowa). Hanks dropped Dennis to the canvas before the bout was stopped with one minute left in the contest. He will take on New York’s Adam Kownacki in the quarterfinal round.
Forty-four bouts will be contested in quarterfinal action on Thursday night at the Chattanooga Convention Center.
