Kicking it with Jamie Seyler
By Bill Kellick // USA Taekwondo // January 3, 2006
Seventeen-year-old lightweight Jamie Seyler of Arlington, Texas, will be competing in the National Team Round Robin Fight-Off on January 7 in Colorado Springs. She will celebrate her 18th birthday on Jan. 8. Seyler was a silver medalist at the 2005 Junior Olympics and won bronze medals at both the 2005 U.S. Open and 2005 Senior Nationals.
Jamie answered the following 10 questions for this month's USA Taekwondo Athlete Profile...
Q1: What are your feelings heading into the U.S. Team Trials in January? Are you training any differently?
JAMIE SEYLER: I’m extremely excited about Team Trials!! My training’s still the same, I workout hard, but I also started an athlete enhancement program called Winning Edge, which helps a lot.
Q2: If you could land a role in any movie, what movie would you like to appear in and who would be your dream co-star?
JAMIE SEYLER: I would love to star in Million Dollar Baby! That movie is very inspiring. I guess I would want Hilary Swank as my co-star! She’s such a great actress!
Q3: What's your dream vacation?
JAMIE SEYLER: My dream vacation would be to travel Europe with my Team (Team Lee) and just have the time of our lives! We are very close and entertain each other, so we’d have a great time!
Q4: What's the last book you read, and how do you rate it out of five stars?
JAMIE SEYLER: The last book I read was Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince! That book was awesome! I’d rate it 5 stars.
Q5: What advice would you give to younger Taekwondo athletes who want to know what it takes to get to the elite level where you are at now?
JAMIE SEYLER: I’d tell them to train hard and to never give up. It may take a while, but the good stuff always comes around as long as you believe in yourself. You have to have the confidence and belief in yourself in order to get where you want to go. Hard work and confidence will get ya there.
Q6: Who is a superhero you'd like to be, and why?
JAMIE SEYLER: I don’t necessarily have a superhero I would like to be, but a person that is a superhero in my eyes is my coach and step-dad, Jeff Pinaroc. He has taught me so much and in so many ways. His accomplishments are amazing and if I had to choose, I would definitely be him!
Q7: What, if anything, have you learned about yourself in the past year?
JAMIE SEYLER: I’ve learned that I can do what I really want to do. If I believe in myself, I can get there, if I have the confidence in myself, I can win.
Q8: Do you have any pre-competition superstitions or rituals that you adhere to?
JAMIE SEYLER: A lot of the time, I just jam out to my music. It helps me get pumped up and ready for competition.
Q9: Do you have a favorite pre-competition meal?
JAMIE SEYLER: I actually don’t eat anything before I compete. It’s odd, but I’m able to fight on an empty stomach.
Q10: Who is a teammate who has had an influence on you, and why?
JAMIE SEYLER: I would have to say Stephen Lambdin has influenced me the most. Since he’s made Junior Team numerous times and we train together, it helps me to work and train harder. He’s awesome to train with and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
