Q&A: Courtney Kupets on the fine art of shopping

A two-time World Champion gymnast and current U.S. National All-Around champion, Courtney Kupets  knows a thing or two about precious metals. Though her wardobe is stocked with gymnastics' elite accolades, Courtney continues to scour shopping malls and unique boutiques for fashion finds and jewelry with a bit more bling factor than her scores of medals provide.

Here, Courtney gives us her tips on the fine art of shopping.

Q1: Where to you like to shop?

COURTNEY KUPETS: It depends. When we travel for meets, I like to hit the malls, just for fun. But when I was in New York in February for the Visa American Cup, I went shopping at a great store called “Strawberry.”  We don’t have them where I live. I bought a lot of stuff including a very cute purse that has “Brooklyn” written on it. (In script letters.) Later this year back in Maryland, I found a matching “Brooklyn” jacket to match the purse. They are both red and white. I couldn’t believe I found that jacket.

Q2: What type of shoes do you like to wear and are you a shoe fiend?

COURTNEY KUPETS: I like wearing flip flops, but my feet need support ,so I usually go for tennis shoes.   I am not so crazy over shoes like a lot of others are. But, I really want those NIKE air shocks in pink, but I’d probably want to wear them with a lot of different clothes so I’d just get a basic color.

Q3:  What size do you wear in clothes?

COURTNEY KUPETS: Junior, size 1 in pants and smalls in tops.

Q4:  So, you are not “Shoe Girl?”

COURTNEY KUPETS:   I am more “Accessory Girl.”  I really like rings, necklaces, watches and purses. I have lots of purses. My favorite kind the ones you hang on your shoulder, but the strap isn’t too long and it hangs right under your arm. I also really like rings. I like the little ones with a colored stone in them. I don’t go for the big, flashy ones. I guess you could say I like the classic look.

Q5:  What’s been your favorite purchase of late?

COURTNEY KUPETS: A white jean jacket.  It’s a half jacket with  ¾ length sleeves and it hits right where your ribs are. I got it at Level 10, in Maryland. I also got a pair of light colored jeans with lots of zippers.  They are really long and fun.

Q6: A lot of women have “the shoe thing.” Since you don’t, is there one thing you think you might have an excess of in your closet?

COURTNEY KUPETS: “Shirts! Oh my god, I don’t know if I can’t count how many I have. It’s at least 50.  My sister says I have too many, but I think I could use more.”

Q7: What was the last CD you bought?

COURTNEY KUPETS: A CD by Maroon Five.  I really like their songs…  I also like Christina Aguilera.
.

Q8: How would you describe your style?

COURTNEY KUPETS:  “I like to find different things that nobody else has.  At nationals, I wore a pink shirt, with a pink shawl around tied around my waist and jeans.  I also have a knitted poncho-type thing that is flower shaped. It’s white and I really like it.”

Q9: If  you could go on a shopping spree to any shop or any city in the world, where would it be?

COURTNEY KUPETS: New York City. I’d hit all the stores. I really liked the Nautica store and Bebe when I was there in February. But I have never been to Rodeo Drive. I’d definitely like to go there—just like Julia Roberts in “Pretty Woman.”  And I’d definitely hit Tiffany’s.”

Q10: Any advice for shopping amateurs?

COURTNEY KUPETS::  My mom taught me that you must love it in order to buy it.  Because if you don’t love it, if it just looks okay on you, you probably won’t wear it, so don’t buy it.”
