Joe Pack on how freestyle aerials are like being shot out of cannon

Q1. What was your first jump like?

JOE PACK: They told me to just go to the top, turn and go, to just live it. I landed on my head and tumbled all the way down the hill. It was the greatest feeling in the world and I wanted to do it again.

Q2. How can you build the sport of freestyle skiing?

JOE PACK: The most important thing to do is to get the youth involved in the sport. There's a lack of good coaches and a lack of facilities. We need a better recruiting program. We need to teach kids on the trampoline and regular skiing.

Q3. What's the next step for your sport?

JOE PACK: The next step will probably be quadruple flips. The problem is there are so few top-notch facilities that you could work on something like that. When we're going 55 feet now, we would have to go 65-70 feet. But we have to think what that's going to do to our bodies.

Q4. What about your layoff after your injury?

JOE PACK: I blew out a knee on the eve of the 1998 Games. After that I went to school for four years to get focused. I really haven't changed much since then. You have to reach your small goals to get your big goals.

Q5. What about your rivalry with Eric Bergoust?

JOE PACK: We're different people and we have different styles. The rivalry is great for the media. But we've been on the team together for five years. We have a lot in common, too. We were great friends before we were No. 1 and No. 2 in the world, and we're great friends now.

Q6. Can you compare ski jumping with aerials?

JOE PACK: They are both high-risk sports. Ski jumping is very technical and smooth. If you don't go after it in aerials, you're in trouble, so you have to be more aggressive. In aerials, you have the option to turn out and stop. But once you turn and go, you have to do it. Ski jumping is like a wind tunnel; aerials are like being shot out of a cannon.

Q7. What are you doing when you're not training?

JOE PACK: When I'm not jumping I'm skiing. The Wasatch Mountains are my playground. We've got the best snow in the world here. I love it.

Q8. What jump did you do the first time you went up?

JOE PACK: I did three flips the first time I jumped. That definitely gets the heart rate up.

Q9. What's the fear factor in aerials?

JOE PACK: There's really two different fear factors: Fear of getting hurt and fear of failure. Fear of getting hurt is just your own dedication to yourself and your physical well-being. When I first jumped I was scared out of my mind but it looked like so much fun I had to do it.

Q10. Why did you change to aerials from ski jumping?

JOE PACK: Aerials are more conducive to my personality. I like flips and twists, the music going, the girls in bikinis. It just fits my own personal style.
