Friedel posted the first shutout by an American goalkeeper in 52 years to help America advance to the quaterfinals of the World Cup in 2002. His parents, Len and Sue, watched the whole thing despite the major time difference.
"When he we walks onto the field he expects to win," Sue said of her son.
On what he considers home after all his travel: "Ohio is where my roots are. The state is where I got my start. If you don't start somewhere, you can never end up somewhere."
