- Mayer has gotten some press during his short career. He has been featured on ESPN, ESPN2, Fox Sports, CBS and written up in the Boston Globe, the Buffalo Evening News, the Steamboat Pilot and Today, and the Orchard Park Bee
- In 1999, Mayer was the youngest member of the U.S. Freestyle Ski Team. At the time he was attending Lowell Whiteman school in Steamboat Springs, Colo

The youthful Mayer isn't shy about showing his emotions, especially when he knew he wrapped up a spot on the Olympic team with his win at the Gold Cup in Park City on New Year's Eve. Mayer anxiously stood at the bottom of the hill as the last competitor in the 15-racer field began his run. When the racer stumbled while landing his second jump, Mayer let out a loud whoop. "That probably wasn't too sportsmanlike of me to do that," Mayer said afterwards. "But I couldn't control it. I'm going to the Olympics!"
