Malchow, Tom
- Three-time Olympian (1996, 2000, 2004)
- 2000 Olympic gold medalist in the 200m fly; 1996 Olympic silver medalist in the 200m fly; finished eighth in the 200m fly at the 2004 Olympic Games
- 2003 World Championships bronze medalist in the 200m fly; silver medalist in the 200m fly at the 2001 Worlds; bronze medalist in the 200m fly at the 1996 Worlds
- Won a gold medal at the 2002 Pan Pacific Championships in the 200m fly
- Set an American record at the 1999 Pan Pacific Championships when he won the 200m fly, silver medalist in the 800m freestyle relay
- Has five U.S. National titles in the 200m fly (spring 2002, 2004; summer 1997, 1998, 2000)
- Youngest man on 1996 U.S. Olympic Swimming Team at age 19
- Started swimming to help his chronic asthma at age seven - "Swimming is more compatible with asthma than land sports. The controlled environment of a swimming pool is very good for me," Malchow said
- Still battles chronic asthma and says he usually ends up in the hospital every two years as a result
- Received a new 2001 silver Corvette from his father after winning gold in Sydney -- making good on a 16-year-old bet
- Became the first individual gold-medal winner from the state of Minnesota at an Olympic Summer Games
- Loves Harley Davidson motorcycles and fast cars, but waiting to learn to ride after swimming career
- Has taken pilot lessons and enjoys playing golf, trap shooting
- Joined the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency's (USADA) mentor program to help educate and inform youngsters and other athletes about the importance of keeping sport clean
- Graduated with a sports management and communications degree at University of Michigan
Lives by his club team's motto: "The only way to swim fast, is to swim fast," which means the only way to swim fast in meets is to swim fast in practice. "I've never considered myself one of the most talented swimmers out there, but I do think I'm one of the hardest workers out there," Malchow said.
