Dumais, Justin

The Short List
  • 2004 Olympian, finished sixth in the 3-meters
  • 13-time National champion
  • Named 2001 U.S. Olympic Committee Male Diver of the Year
Did You Know?
  • First place in both the 3-meter and platform at 2001 U.S. National Outdoor Diving Championships, as well as first in both synchronized events with younger brother Troy
  • Awarded Academic All-American of the Year his senior year of college at the University of Texas (2001-2002) and as a finance major he maintained a perfect 4.0 grade-point average throughout his four years
  • His most embarrassing – and most humorous – diving moment came when he was 16 years old and he lost his Speedo after diving off the 10 meter. He had to come up for air before plunging down to the bottom of the pool to retrieve his suit
  • Drove over an hour and a half each way to diving lessons when he was younger with his parents towing all five diving children along
  • His favorite dive is a back 1 ½ somersault 3 ½ twists (which better known as 5237D); he trains 10 hours a day and up to 60 hours a week
  • Says the most influential people in his life are his parents, who he praises for raising him as an independent child, supporting himself since his first job at the age of 15
  • Obtained his private pilot license in 2001 and hopes to go to fly F-16s in the Air National Guard; spends most of his free time in the air
  • Hopes to get into aerobatics – competitions similar to air shows – often pulling up to 10 or 11 Gs and have amazing piloting skills
  • Hobbies include surfing, weight training, playing golf and listening to music
  • Favorite movies are Top Gun and Iron Eagle…book is The Monkey Wrench Gang, which he describes as a satirical look at modern day society
  • Is an avid salsa dancer, goes almost every Sunday night and says he hasn’t met many girls who’ve been able to say no to a salsa date
  • Justin and his brother Troy often pair up as teammates in synchronized diving events
It's Every Day

Dumais was diagnosed with Graves’ disease, which causes overproduction of the thyroid hormone, in December 2003. Dumais went to the doctor after feeling so tired that he could hardly take a shower. Graves’ disease mainly strikes middle-aged women, the disease baffled doctors and Dumais. He started taking medication in Feb. 2004, but after talking to a nutritionist he decided to cut aspartame from his diet. In mid-March, Dumais went off his medication and cut diet soda out of his diet. The results baffled the doctors. Dumais feels much better and questions whether he ever really had Graves’ disease, which has no known cure.
