Carpenter began skating with brother, Cory, who also is a member of the U.S. team, in 1985. During the winter, their father made an ice track in the backyard of their Michigan home. Years later, the family moved from Michigan to Wisconsin so the brothers could pursue the sport full time. Kip and Cory made a pact to someday walk in the Olympic Opening Ceremonies together. However, Kip missed the 1998 Olympics after he was disqualified from his best events during the U.S. Short Track Trials. Meanwhile, Cory skated in three events in the Nagano Olympics. In 2002, the fortunes reversed. Kip made the Long Track team but Cory missed out on a return spot on the U.S. Olympic team.
