- Bronze medalist in the four-man at the 2004 World Championships
- In 2004, became the first American driver to win a medal at every track during the World Cup season
- Finished 5th in four-man at the 2005 World Championships
- Finished in the top-five in every four-man race in the 2005 season, winning two World Cups
- Won eight World Cup medals in 2004 (three medals in two-man, five medals in four-man)
- Collected seven medals in 2003 (three gold and one silver in two-man, three silvers in four-man)
- Gold medalist in 2-man and 4-man at 2001 Calgary World Cup
- Won nine medals (four gold, four silver and one bronze) in 2002 World Cup competition
- Played linebacker for the University of Tulsa football team (1990-91), leading the Golden Hurricane to a Freedom Bowl victory over Texas A&M in 1991
- Played two seasons in the Canadian Football League
- Earned bachelor's degree in physical education from Tulsa
- 1993 National Kickboxing champion who used to be an ultimate fighter
- Defeated the undefeated Japanese martial-arts champion in front of about 60,000 fans in Japan in 1995, helping to win $10,000
- Would like to coach football some day
Hays is one of the fiercest competitors around, but he doesn't let anything get in the way of his bobsledding. "You don't let fear, politics, friendships or anything get in the way. You can't take it personally."
