Teela, Jeremy
- Member of the 2002 U.S. Olympic Team, competing in biathlon
- Posted the best U.S. finish in an individual event in 14 years at the 2001 World Championships, finishing ninth in the 10K Sprint
- Serves as an E4 specialist in the U.S. Army and has been a member of the Army's World Class Athlete Program since 1994
- Jumped to ninth in the '01 World Championships Sprint in Pokljuka, Slovenia, after finishing 62nd in the same event in 2000
- Won the '01 World Team Trials Sprint and finished second in Pursuit
- Credits the Army and its WCAP program - which allows select soldier-athletes to pursue athletic excellence as part of their military obligation - for advancing his chances at the Salt Lake City Games
- Said following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, that he is "ready" to serve if his unit were called. "We're soldiers first. When I joined, I signed up with the knowledge and intent I was going to go to war."
- Was a competitive swimmer in high school in the 50m free and 100m butterfly and ran cross-country in junior high
- Offsets the rigors of competitive biathlon with motocross racing and table tennis
Teela takes added pride these days knowing that he will not only represent the United States in Salt Lake, but the U.S. Army as well. "Representing the most powerful country in the world and the most powerful army in the world, it really kind of chokes me up when I think about it. It would really mean a lot just to wear that medal for the country."
"You have to spend a lot of time with your rifle. You have to get know your rifle. You have to spend a lot of time in your room standing with the rifle pointed at the wall without ammunition to get your muscles used to the position."
