Hakkinen had a frustratingly inconsistent 2000-01 season, so he took an early extended break from biathlon before returning to train for the 2001-02 campaign, and specifically, the Olympic Winter Games. He came back from the time off re-energized and ready to focus on the strategy he designed to prepare himself for the 2002 Games.
