Chellsie Memmel
- 2005 World Champion in the all-around
- Became the first American female gymnast to win the world all-around title since Shannon Miller in 1994 and the third ever (Kim Zemskal, 1991; Miller, 1993, 1994)
- Missed qualifying for the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team after breaking her left foot in April; served as a team alternate
- As an alternate press into duty at the 2003 World Championships, Memmel helped the U.S. win the team gold medal and tied for the uneven bars gold medal with Hollie Vise
- Silver medalist in both the uneven bars and balance beam at the 2005 World Championships
- Rebounded after the 2004 Games, to win the 2004 World Cup Final gold in the uneven bars
- Earned five medals at the 2003 Pan American Games, including the team and all-around gold medals
- Has two sisters, Mara (1/17/90) and Skyler (4/17/97), who are gymnasts. Mara focuses on artistic gymnastics while Skyler trains both artistic and rhythmic
- Her parents, Andrew and Jeanelle Memmel, were both All-American gymnasts and won full college athletic scholarships. Her parents own M&M Gymnastics, where Memmel is coached by her father.
- "I think it is really great to be coached by my dad. Sometimes it comes up (at the dinner table), but we still try to separate it, so gymnastics isn't all that we talk about."
- Enjoys swimming in a lake, shopping, movies and hanging out with friends
- Considers herself a normal teenager, had pictures of herself taken in her prom dress while hanging from the uneven bars
- Favorite subject is math ... TV show, friends ... just saw Pirates 2 ... and just read Lifeguard by James Patterson
- Decided in late 2005 to forgo her NCAA eligibility and become a professional athlete. Her future plans include enrolling in college, possibly Marquette University, near her home in Wisconsin
On winning the 2005 World all-around title over teammate Nastia Liukin by just 0.001 points:
"I'm amazed right now," said Memmel. “It hasn't sunk in yet. I can't believe it. I just came in really prepared. I had a lot of training under my belt and I just was thinking to take it one event at a time. It was a combination of [all my event scores], but definitely my floor routine was the strongest. I owe a lot to my Dad. This is just a great finish for this year."
On her disappointment in not making the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team: "It was a huge disappointment to get so close to it (2004 Olympic Team) and not make the actual team. You just go home and decide what you want to do. Do you want to train again or you could just be done. I decided to continue training, and there are a lot of huge opportunities out there because a lot of the Olympic Team was doing to the tour or moving onto college. It was really great to get out to those bigger competitions."
