Niccum’s quest for Torino almost ended in November 2005, after a serious crash during a training session in Cesana Pariol. He and doubles partner Patrick Quinn crashed their sled while sliding faster than 80mph. Niccum suffered a concussion, forcing him to rest for several weeks and miss two World Cup races. Niccum and Quinn failed to qualify for the Olympic team in the doubles event, but Niccum qualified as a singles slider based on his performances from the past season.
Niccum on being a professional luger: "What I do is the ultimate sledding ride. It's a fantasy, to be able to go that fast, on a sled you can actually steer. I guess I feel like a little kid sometimes. As I go through the finish line, I'll giggle to myself like, I can't believe this is what I get to do every day. It's every kid's dream." The Seattle Times
