Bird is considered one of the most influential players in basketball history even though he was once called ‘the hick from French Lick.’ He has many records to prove his significant impact on the game. He has 30 Indiana State University records including most points (2,850), steals (240) and rebounds (1,247). Bird retired with 21,791 points, 8,974 rebounds and 5,695 assists in 897 games. He is ranked fifth in the all-time category for free-throws with .886 from the line. The Boston Celtics retired the No. 33 jersey. He also held or shared 27 Celtics’ records when he retired. Bird became a Hall of Famer in 1998. "Larry Bird has helped define the way a generation of basketball fans has come to view and appreciate the NBA," said Commissioner David J. Stern when Bird retired due to a painful back condition in 1992 (from NBA.com).
