Without special contact lenses, Hurd is legally blind, and her myopic disorder and retinal degeneration can affect her depth perception. In competition, she uses wide, brightly colored strips of tape on the runway to help prevent fouling. At the press conference following her victory at Olympic Trials, however, her vision was hindered by a different condition – tears of joy. Although Hurd admits that she is usually the “happy, bubbly one in the triple jump,” the athlete was overcome by emotion and couldn’t help weeping. With typical humor, she promptly apologized to the press corps for being a “crybaby.”
“I cannot explain how good it feels the moment you find out you’re an Olympian. Being an Olympian and knowing I’m going to Athens is all I’ve been waiting for the last four years.”
