Magera, John
- Had competed in only four tournaments before making the 2004 Olympic team in June.
- Finished third at Olympic Trials.
- Second in the 2003 Prairie State Games.
- 10th at the 2004 Texas Shootout.
- Ninth at the Gold Cup in 2004.
- Won the Southern Illinois Cup in 2004.
- Started archery at age 3.
- As a child, often read a 1968 copy of the Archer’s Bible.
- His love of archery is born of decades of hunting and working in the great outdoors. Magera shot a traditional-style bow for 30 years before picking up the Olympic recurve bow in June 2003.
- He hasn’t missed an archery deer season in 25 years, and along with hunting and fishing he works as a refuge manager for the Middle Mississippi River National Wildlife Refuge. He also enjoys golf and photography.
- Magera has worked tirelessly to raise money for his wife Karin and his mother to go to Athens. Friends helped him raise funds through the John Magera Olympic Fund, collecting a total of over $4,000 as of late July.
- Among other things he did a two-hour segment with the Zimmer Radio Group in Illinois demonstrating how to shoot for competition.
- “It’s all positive attention,” he told the Southern Illinoisan. “But at some point, I have to say I’m not getting enough work done.”
