As a child, Perry dreamed of being a professional track and field athlete, and she accepted a partial scholarship to attend powerhouse UCLA even through she was offered full scholarships at other schools. She had specialized in hurdles in high school, but coaches Bob Kersee and Jeanette Bolden recognized her potential and eventually groomed her for the heptathlon. Learning to throw was a new kind of challenge for the determined athlete. As Perry told the Daily Bruin in 2001, “I didn’t realize how critical and technical the throws were. It’s harder to be a thrower than a sprinter because sprinting takes a lot out of you cardiovascularly, but throwing takes a lot out of you mentally.”
