Running is in Flanagan’s genes: her mother, Cheryl Tweworgy, was on the U.S. World Cross Country team and also set a world record in the marathon, while her father, Steve Flanagan, was an impressive middle-distance runner in college and beyond. But they didn’t pressure Shalane to run, and for a long time the youngster wasn’t aware of her pedigree, even though she saw both parents running nearly every day. As she told the New York Times in 2003, “I had no idea they were at the elite level; I just thought they were recreational joggers.”
After the 5,000m finals at the 2004 Olympic Trials:“You have these dreams about making the team, . . . but when it actually happens, you still don’t know how to react. Today is such a special day and it’s so exciting. This is my first Olympic Trails, and to make the team, it reminds you why you ran all those miles.”
