Prior to her partnership with Dan, Severson began her climb to success on another capable mount, Over The Limit. In 1999, the duo was in the winner’s circle in Lexington having won the USET Three-Star Spring Championship. This win was key in her being selected to represent the United States in the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Canada. Unfortunately, Severson had to withdraw from the Pan American team when Over The Limit encountered health problems. In 1999, Severson was awarded a USET grant to compete Over The Limit at the Blenheim CCI*** and placed second. Two years later, in September 2001, she won the Blenheim CCI*** on Winsome Adante. Earlier that year, she rode him to the Reserve Championship in the USET Three-Star Spring Championship at the MBNA Foxhall Cup. In October 1999, she won the two-star event at Radnor. She and Over The Limit placed fourth (behind Olympic medalists Blyth Tait, David and Karen O'Connor) in the 2000 Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event CCI**** presented by Bayer.
Severson credits much of her success to her horses’ owner, Linda Wachtmeister, who hired her in 1996 to exercise horses and as an instructor for her daughters. "This all goes back to Linda. I ride at her farm, she foots the whole bill. It's like she's a parent and a friend who looks after me, and I do the same for her, I hope. It's sort of a fairy tale." -- AZCentral.com
On “Dan”: “I feel more connected with Winsome Adante than I have in the past, he feels stronger and more together.” -- Horsedaily News
