Two days after earning her spot on the U.S. Olympic Team, Williams decided to turn pro, forfeiting her last season of eligibility for NCAA competition as a Miami Hurricane. As she told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, “Everyone felt it would be in my best interest to do it now from a financial standpoint. I could run in college another year, but what if I get hurt? What if something happens?”
Nonetheless, Williams expects to return to Miami in the future for the remaining semester she needs to earn a degree in finance. “I have no regrets, nothing but great things to say about Miami,” she commented in the Post-Gazette. “That school made me who I am.”
“There’s no such thing as a celebrity to me, because they’re human beings just like us. I want people to look at me and say I’m a role model because I’m me, not because I run fast.”—www.hurricanesports.com, May 24, 2002
