At Trials, Johnson and her U.S teammates on the 400m hurdle Olympic squad (Brenda Taylor and Lashinda Demus) set the fastest times in the world for 2004. “I knew that we’d all have to run a P.R. [personal record] to make the team,” Johnson notes. The impressive performance makes them the athletes to beat. As quoted by The Associated Press, Johnson said, “I know everybody’s going to come after me, so I guess I’ve just got to run. I know we have the best hurdlers in the world, so as long as I know that, I think I’ll be OK.”
“I dreamed of making the team ever since high school. To actually do it is really special.”—Sheena Johnson after winning the 400m hurdles at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials
