Katie Smith
- Two-time Olympic gold medalist (2000, 2004)
- Has accumulated five other gold medals and two silver medals in international competition while representing the U.S., including two World titles (1998, 2002)
- All-time leading scorer in U.S. women’s professional basketball history
- Served as an Olympic torchbearer in Columbus, Ohio for the 2002 Salt Lake Games on Jan. 2, 2002
- Four-time All-WNBA and four-time WNBA All-Star for the Minnesota Lynx
- Set seven single-season WNBA records in 2001 and in 2003 set the new WNBA all-time record for 3-point field goals made with 287
- Began playing basketball in 5th grade on a boy's team
- Her pregame ritual is not tucking her jersey into her shorts until she is going out onto the floor for the opening tip
- Named the Ohio State Female Athlete of the Century by the Columbus Touchdown Club, with Male Athlete of the Century going to Olympic legend Jesse Owens
- Played in the old American Basketball League (ABL) for the Columbus Quest where she helped lead the team to two ABL titles in 1997 and 1998
- Plays overseas in Europe during the off-season for Lotos VBW Clima in Gdynia, Poland
- Learned her gracefulness as a young girl when she enjoyed tap and ballet dancing
- Considers her parents and her late grandmother as the people she admires most
- Enjoys listening to music, being outside, playing pool, cooking and being with friends in her spare time
- Katie’s favorite food is her mom's stir fry
Smith graduated from Ohio State, where she recently returned as a student assistant in the women’s basketball office. She’s currently studying in preparation for application to dental school, where she hopes to follow in the footsteps of her father…a dentist.
On winning her second Olympic gold medal and her teammates: “I am so happy for everyone, especially Lisa (Leslie), Dawn (Staley) and Sheryl (Swoopes). They helped build this and we want to keep it going over the next four years. It was so much fun ... I wish I could have stayed healthy but it was so exciting to be part of it.”
