Dan credits his coach for his success….Salazar and Nike have undertaken a multi-million dollar training project for Dan and others that houses the runners in a specially designed home that simulates high-altitude conditions. The house, in Portland, is at sea level, but features molecular filters that remove oxygen, creating the sensation of life at 12, 000 feet. Living at high altitude, which requires the body to adapt to less oxygen in the air, increases oxygen-carrying efficiency and is believed to improve performance. Earlier this year, however, Dan wanted his own space and moved from the group house and created a similar set up in his own home. He has a small “altitude room” where he sleeps.
“To be honest….one of my favorite things in life is to inspire people to do things they might not do on their own. That’s the direction I see my life heading when I’m done running, whether that’s as a coach, a motivational speaker, a boss. I have a passion for running, but I also have maybe an even greater passion for inspiring people.”
