Colleen began running while growing up in South Africa, racing against her brother to the grocery store. She enjoyed running longer distances with her father and brother as a schoolgirl. She met her husband and fellow runner, Darren in 1983 at the University of Port Elizabeth where she was majoring in geology and physical education. The couple married in 1988 and Darren is a running coach. Their daughter, a third-grader said, “Dad wants me to be a runner, but I don’t want to.” Instead, she plays soccer and takes jazz dancing lessons.
“The family is the foundation. If you have a happy family, it transfers into other parts of your life.”
