In 2001, Alan named as one of “America’s Best” in culture and society by CNN/Time Magazine; an essay was written for the honor by U.S. representative Jim Ryun, who said, “The full measure of Alan’s achievement will emerge as younger athletes, inspired by his feat, push themselves further than they otherwise might have.”

On the pain of running the mile, Alan told usatoday.com: "The pain can be pretty bad. But when I'm on pace, the excitement gets me through each lap. Adrenaline can get you beyond the pain."
