- Running with the flu, placed 17th in the 1st round of 10,000m at 2000 Olympics
- Finished third in three U.S. championships in 2002 (10km, 12km, and 15km)
- Top American finisher (21st) at 1999 World Cross Country Championships
- Won the 1996 NCAA 5000m outdoor title while competing for Colorado
- Graduated with a degree in geography and sociology in 1996

- Got his start running in a summer track program, and as a prep, won five Texas high school championships
- Married 1500m runner Shayne Wille on November 9, 1997
- Has one son, Cruz Samuel, born April 10, 2002
- Owns a graphic design business named Culpepper Mill, which, among other things, produces shirt designs for road races as well as business cards
- Enjoys playing the guitar and piano
Sometimes giving 110% effort can be counterproductive, especially if it takes too much out of an athlete. Although he trains over 100 miles per week, Culpepper guards against pushing it too much: “I've always had this motto that if you can't see yourself coming back a year later and doing the same workout you just did and doing it a little bit better, then you've probably worked out too hard.”
