Wilcox, Lisa
- 2004 U.S. Olympic Team member
- Won team silver at the 2002 World Equestrian Games
- Finished 2001 and began 2002 ranked 5th in the world
- Became the first non-European rider to enter the top-10 of the BCM-FEI World Dressage Riders Rankings
- Claimed numerous Grand Prix victories in Germany and Holland throughout the fall of 2001
- Began her equestrian career as an eventer who occasionally rode in dressage competitions.
- Former husband Jan Ebeling was also her trainer and a German grand prix rider.
- In 1994, Wilcox took Funny Boy to Germany for four months to train with Herbert Rehbein, five-time champion professional German dressage trainer, who was widely considered one of the best trainers in the world.
- Returned to Europe again in 1995, working at a stud farm in Denmark for six months, and then at a stud farm in Germany for two years
- Was offered a job at Gestut Vorwerk, an Oldenburg stud farm, during the 1997 European Dressage Championships.
- While working at the farm, earned her Bereiter certificate and became a licensed riding instructor.
- Lives and trains in Europe with Ernst Hoyos, who is a rider for the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, Austria.
- Makes sure she gets plenty of practice in when she’s not competing on the international stage, riding up to six horses per day.
After her initial stay in Germany in 1994 training with Rehbein, Wilcox returned to the U.S. However, something just wasn’t right. Wilcox wanted more. It was then that she recognized her desire to be the best and to dedicate her life to Equestrian. “I guess the passion and the fire that Rehbein lit in me made me want to stay and learn more.” So she returned to her German trainer and began her journey towards her goal of competing in the Olympic Games.
Wilcox feels that for young riders wanting to have success in dressage they have to understand that it is work. "It's a lot of hard work and they've got to be willing to do it. I don't see anything all day except horses and I'm happy to come home at the end of the day to my bed. There's no personal life at all. Success is all about sacrifice," concluded Wilcox.
