Since 1997, Colin has been a full-time Systems Engineer for Northrop Gruman Information Tech-
nology, while training and keeping a social life. Describing herself as "always an overachiever,"
she began kayaking in 1991 after tearing her right ACL for the second time. A state champion
in gymnastics during her high school days at Punahou School in Hawaii, Colin was introduced
to kayaking and outrigger paddling during rehab of her injury. She tried kayaking for two weeks
before deciding she liked outrigger paddling better. However, at her high school kayaking was a
sport, therefore during her junior year she made the team and ended up coming home with the 1991
gold medal for junior K-4 at the U.S. Nationals. She recalls hearing the announcer as they
crossed the finish line, "Here comes the 1991 National Champions!"
Since then she has been addicted to the sport. At the University of Washington, she began rowing
to be involved in a collegiate sport and her sophomore year her JV boat won the National
Championships in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1995-96, Colin decided not to row and make an effort at the
1996 Olympic Team Trials for kayaking. She finished ninth at the trials which only inspired her to train
harder for the 2000 Games. In 1997, she graduated with a B.S. degree in Computer Engineering
and moved to the OTC in Chula Vista to train. She made her first world team that year and by 1998
she was the top ranked female kayaker in the U.S. and tenth in the World.
