Smart became involved in fencing after her parents read in the newspaper about the Peter Westbrook Foundation, an organization founded by a six-time U.S. Olympian to draw in minority and underprivileged children to fencing. Smart, who is black, balances a full-time job with training for the 2004 Olympic Games, and competes in a sport where many of her international competitors fence for a living. She has come to the forefront of the sport in recent months due to the absence of teammates, and sisters, Felicia and Iris Zimmerman, who are taking time off to concentrate on school.
