After winning two golds at the 2000 Olympic Games, Bennett struggled with increasing shoulder pain. "I had a lot of inflammation in both shoulders, so everyday at workout I was experiencing a lot of pain," she said. "It had got to the point I was unable to get through a normal two hour workout." But she wasn't ready to retire, so Bennett decided to have both shoulders surgically corrected in 2001 with hopes of making her third Olympic team in 2004.
On her comeback goals from shoulder surgery: "I think the ultimate would be breaking a world record. However, right now every time I race I am looking for a new personal best, this is what I am calling the start of my new and improved career."
