Sanders was inspired to begin gymnastics by her father who was the 1963 NCAA trampoline runner-up and Big Ten champion. He was her coach until he passed away while she was still young. The inspiration her father instilled in her drives Sanders to work hard everyday. Her gymnastics goals are to work hard and to make her father proud.

On being flexible: “Part of it, you have to be naturally flexible. You can't just walk into a gym and fold in half. You have to be somewhat naturally flexible, and then you work on that. You overstretch, and then you overstretch a little more every day, and eventually it just comes. Then it doesn't hurt any more.”
