Iris began fencing when she was 6, because her older sister Felicia was fencing. She was music major in high school, playing both piano and flute. Zimmermann was the first American Fencer to win a world championship, the 1995 Under-17 Championships, at only 14 years of age. She’s also a multiple World Under-20 and Under-17 medalist. Zimmerman decided to take time off from Stanford in the spring of 2003, to devote herself to reaching the podium in Athens 2004.
