- Four-time member of U.S. World Cup Teams (1997-2000); had three top 3 finishes with U.S. World Cup Team in 2000

- Fractured her right foot in 1999, but rebounded after a five-month layoff to place first in the team trials and secure a spot on the World Cup Team
- Took up sport at age 13 when she went to the shooting range with her brother's high school cross-country ski team and asked to join in
- Attended high school (Anchorage's Service High) with teammate Jeremy Teela
- Father, Paul, is a physician specializing in internal medicine and infectious diseases; mother, Bonnie is a phlebotomist or blood specialist
- Eldest brother, Zack, has competed in two Iditarod Sled Dog Races - finishing 22nd in 1998 and 14th in 2000; mother serves as a part-time sled-dog handler
- Grew up skiing and hunting in Alaska with outside interests ranging from violin to swimming to track to triathlon
- Wants to open a catering business or be an Alaskan tour guide upon retiring from competition

Steer recalls a race in Italy in 1996 in which the fans first took a fancy to her performance and her bright auburn hair. While skiing in the Europa Cup, Steer noticed a sign that read "Steer Rachel Fantastic" and she has since received notes and flowers from Italian admirers. Steer, however, says she's fine with keeping a relatively low profile. "I'm glad I'm from America and nobody knows me. I don't know how I'd be able to handle that kind of attention and (for European stars) media criticism."
"I'm shocked. Somebody's got to get her butt in gear on skis. This is the most stressful week I've ever had in my life."
