USA Dominates World Indoor Championships

The USA Men won three gold and three bronze medals while the USA Women won a gold, silver and bronze medal. The USA led the rest of the world with their total of 9 medals. Russia and Italy tied for second with 7 medals each.
The individual gold medal was won by Braden Gellenthien in the Compound Men’s Individual.
The team gold medals were won by the Compound Men’s Team consisting of Dave Cousins, Reo Wilde and Gellenthien; the Compound Women’s Team consisting of Christie Colin, Jamie Van Natta and Holly Pagel; and the Compound Jr. Men’s Team consisting of Ryan Day, Adam Wruck and Bryce Wickliffe.
The silver medal was won by the Compound Jr. Women’s Team consisting of Amber Christensen, Elissa Falconer and Kendal Nicely.
Individual bronze medals were won by Aaron Tedford in the Recurve Jr. Men’s Individual; Amber Christensen in the Compound Jr. Women’s Individual; and Shawn Rice in the Recurve Men’s Individual.
The team bronze medal was won by the Men’s Recurve Team consisting of Staten Holmes, Vic Wunderle and Rice.
Three world records were shot during the competition. The Compound Jr. Men’s Team of Day, Wruck and Wickliffe shot a world record 233 in the semifinals against Russia. The Compound Men’s Team of Cousins, Wilde and Gellenthien shot a world record 239 in their semifinal match against the Netherlands. The Compound Men’s Team of Colin, Pagel and Van Natta shot a world record against the Netherlands and tied it again in their match against Belgium.

Compound Jr. Men’s Individual: Bryce Wickliffe had a bye, then defeated Segin of Russia 113-113, Polidori of Italy 114-112 before losing to Marbacher of Switzerland 113-113. Ryan Day had a bye, and then defeated Ates of Turkey 117-113 before losing to Marbacher of Switzerland 118-115. Adam Wruck defeated Isik of Turkey 114-112 before losing to Marbacher of Switzerland 114-113.
Compound Jr. Women’s Individual: Amber Christensen defeated Brown of Great Britain 115-112, Bolotova of Russia 114-110 before losing to Anastasia of Italy 111-111. Christensen defeated Mozhaykina of Russia to win the bronze medal. Kendal Nicely defeated Senturk of Turkey 116-80 before losing to Anastasia of Italy 114-113. Elissa Falconer defeated Arikan of Turkey 111-110 before losing to Ioannou of Greece 116-113.
Recuve Jr. Men’s Individual: Aaron Tedford defeated Martret of France 115-113, Giori of Italy 114-114, and Gillieron of Switzerland 114-113 before losing to Shakirov of Russia 116-114. Tedford defeated Belov of Russia to win the bronze medal. Maxwell Van Pelt and Jordan Brown did not qualify for the elimination round.
Recurve Jr. Women’s Individual: Stephanie Rowland defeated Caldwell of USA 114-108 and Struyf of Belgium 116-115 before losing to Veselovska of Russia 115-112. Rachel Caldwell lost to Rowland of USA 114-108. Heather Koehl did not qualify for the elimination round.
Compound Men’s Individual: Braden Gellenthien defeated Ozdemir of Turkey 116-116, Malm of Sweden 116-116, Wilde of USA 119-118, Genet of France 118-117 and Duo of Spain 116-114 to win the gold medal. Gellenthien had a strong start with a perfect 30, compared to Duo’s 27 pts. He then led 59 to 55 pts and finally 88 – 84 pts. Reo Wilde defeated Sitar of Slovakia 120-115, Verdeyem of Belgium 118-116 before losing to Gellenthien of USA 119-118. Dave Cousins defeated Forbes of Great Britain 118-116 before losing to Duo of Spain 118-118.
Compound Women’s Individual: Holly Pagel defeated Holderness of Great Britain 115-112, Novikova of Russia 117-112 before losing to Galletti of Italy 115-114. Christie Colin defeated Zorman of Croatia 115-111 before losing to Fabre of France 117-117. Jamie Van Natta lost to Svensen of Norway 114-114.
Recuve Men’s Individual: Shawn Rice defeated Ginzel of Germany 120-113, Wakino of Japan 115-113, and Tavernier of France 118-118, before losing to Ivashko of Ukraine 119-113. Rice took the bronze medal defeating Galiazzo of Italy 120-119. Rice and Galiazzo offered a great match for the bronze medal. They were both tied until the last arrow shooting perfectly (110-110). However, the last arrow was decisive. Only Rice could keep it perfect and won 120-119 pts. Vic Wunderle lost to Serdyuk of Ukraine 118-117. Staten Holmes lost to Wills of Great Britain 117-115.
Recurve Women’s Individual: Jennifer Comedy-Holmes lost to Unruh of Germany 115-112. Kendra Harvey lost to Boonen of Netherlands 114-109. Phyllis Shipman did not qualify for the elimination round.
Compound Jr. Men’s Team: The Jr. Men’s team of Day, Wickliffe and Wruck had a bye, and then set a world record in defeating Russia 233-230. They defeated Italy 229-223 to win the gold medal. FITA reported, “In the Gold battle, the first end was tied 28-28, but the score grew in favor of the US Team in the following ends. The score after 12 arrows was 114-111. The second set of 12 arrows was also led by the USA who were not to be pushed around and finally defeated the Italians to take home the Gold!”
Compound Jr. Women’s Team: The Jr. Women’s team of Christensen, Falconer and Nicely defeated Turkey 225-183 before losing to Russia 225-222 to win the silver medal. The Russian Team led the match after 12 arrows by 2 pts. The USA tried hard, but could not come back to the score.
Recuve Jr. Men’s Team: The Jr. Men’s team of Brown, Tedford and Van Pelt defeated Kazakhstan 226-222 before losing to Italy 229-224.
Recurve Jr. Women’s Team: The Jr. Women’s team of Caldwell, Koehl and Rowland lost to Kazakhstan 224-210.
Compound Men’s Team: The Men’s team of Cousins, Gellenthien and Wilde had a bye and then defeated Australia 234-232, set a world record in defeating Netherlands 239-233, defeated France 232-230 to win the gold medal. The Men’s Team easily made it to the finals. FITA reported, “In the final, the two teams had to adapt to the special Finals field in the Kültürpark Hall. They start both with a 58 pts, but France took a 117-116 pts lead after 12 arrows. The US came back after 18 arrows: 174 – 174 pts. Once again, the US finished strong with another 58 pts while France could not keep the pace scoring 56 pts with their last 6 arrows. Final score: 232 – 230, gold for USA!”
Compound Women’s Team: The Women’s team of Colin, Pagel and Van Natta defeated Netherlands 233-223, Belgium 233-224 and Russia 227-226 to win the gold medal. The Women’s Team had no trouble making it to the finals where they faced Russia. FITA reported “Russia, led by World Cup Winner Goncharova, took on the USA. The Russians took on an early lead after 6 arrows 57-56 out of a possible 60. At half-match, the score was 114-113, but the USA tied after 18 arrows at 170-170. The USA scored another 57 points with the last three arrows, while Russia could reach 56 pts, although one arrow was just outside the 10 circle. USA pulled out a come back victory 227- 226 pts!”
Recuve Men’s Team: The Men’s team of Holmes, Rice and Wunderle had a bye and then defeated France 235-230 before losing to Germany 233-229. They defeated Japan 231-231 to win the bronze medal. As FITA reported, “the match was one of the closest ever. Japan and the USA were neck-to-neck: 58-57, 117-116, 174-174, and 231-231 pts. They had to shoot a tie-break. Each team shoots three arrows (one per team member), a maximum of three times. After the first three arrows, the teams were tied. After the second three arrows, the teams were still tied. On the third over-time of three arrows, both teams shot a perfect score of 30 pts! It was then the arrow closes to the center that decided the winner and Wunderle gave the bronze medal to the USA!”
Recurve Women’s Team: The Women’s team of Comedy-Holmes, Harvey and Shipman defeated Great Britain 226-225 before losing to Germany 232-226.
