U.S. takes two golds, one silver at Shanghai

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Two hundred of the top archers in the world competed in Shanghai, China September 27-30 for Stage four of the Meteksan Archery World Cup, with the U.S. compound team bringing home two gold medals and one silver.

Dave Cousins (Standish, Maine) took home the individual gold medal for the compound men after defeating Spain’s Jorge Jimenez easily 114-109 in the finals. Jimenez claimed the silver and Vitor Sidi Neto (Brazil) took the bronze. Reo Wilde (Pocatello, Idaho), who won the gold medal at the first leg of the 2006 World Cup in Croatia, was eliminated by Sidi Neto in the quarterfinals. El Salvador World Cup gold medalist Logan Wilde (Pocatello, Idaho) was defeated by Mexico’s Fernando Becerra 116-113 in the second round. Reo Wilde finished the individual competition in 7th place, while Logan Wilde finished in 18th place.

The U.S. Compound Men’s Team of Cousins, Reo Wilde and Logan Wilde won its third 2006 Meteksan Archery World Cup gold medal, after defeating Mexico 230-226 in the finals. The men’s compound team from Mexico took the silver and China won the bronze.

For the compound women, Jamie Van Natta (Toledo, Ohio), who won the individual silver in Croatia and El Salvador, faced her U.S. teammate Jahna Davis (Helena, Mont.) in the quarterfinals, where Van Natta took the match in a tiebreaker. Next, Van Natta faced Russia’s Sofia Goncharova in the semifinals, but lost the match 109-105. In the bronze medal match, Van Natta lost to Anna Kazantseva (Russia) in a tiebreaker. Goncharova went on to win the gold, while Linda Ochoa (Mexico) took the silver. Van Natta finished the individual competition in fourth place, Davis finished in fifth and Christie Colin (Cape May, N.J.) finished in 11th place. Davis knocked out Colin in a close 109-106 match in the 1/8 round.

Van Natta, Davis and Colin, who claimed the team bronze in both Croatia and El Salvador, won the team silver in Shanghai after defeating the team from the Philippines easily 216-209 in the semifinals, then facing Russia in the finals. Russia won the match 224-218 taking home the gold, while the U.S. took the silver. The Philippines won the bronze for the compound women.

The U.S. had one competitor in each the men’s and women’s recurve categories in Shanghai. Pete Carney (Salt Lake City, Utah) defeated Chinese Taipei’s Wei Cheng Kuo 113-109 in the first round of elimination, and then fell to Italy’s Marco Galiazzo in a close 107-106 match in the second round. Carney ended the individual competition in 29th place. Korea’s Yong-Ho Jang and Kyung-Mo Park took the gold and silver medals for the recurve men, while China’s Fujun Yong claimed the bronze.

Joy Fahrenkrog (Denver, Colo.) faced Korea’s Tuk Young Lee in the first round, where she lost the match 112-94. Korea swept the medals for the recurve women with Ok-Hee Yun taking the gold, Mi-Jin Yun winning the silver and Lee claiming the bronze. Fahrenkrog finished the individual competition in 58th place for the recurve women.

The top four individuals in each category of the 2006 Meteksan Archery World Cup (recurve men and women, compound men and women) will be invited for the final in Merida, Mexico in October. Reo Wilde, Dave Cousins, Jamie Van Natta and Jahna Davis will all be competing for the U.S. in the World Cup final.
