Van Natta sets new world record

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The first half of the 2006 National Target Championships came to a close Wednesday as the FITA short distances were completed during the second full day of competition. Jamie Van Natta (Toledo, Ohio) set a world record and remains in the lead for the compound women, while Dave Cousins (Standish, Maine) is still holding first place for the compound men. Two-time Olympian Vic Wunderle (Mason City, Ill.) and 2000 Olympian Karen Scavotto (Enfield, Conn.) are leading the way for recurve.
Wunderle took the lead for the recurve men after finishing the day with a score of 1322. Tim Meyers (Ft. Worth, Texas) is in second with 1311 and Guy Krueger (Blessing, Texas) jumped into third place with a score of 1307. Four-time Olympian Butch Johnson (Woodstock, Conn.) is right behind Krueger in fourth place with 1306.
Scavotto jumped into the lead today for the recurve women with a score of 1330. Three-time Olympian for the Republic of Georgia Khatuna Lorig (Stanhope, N.J.) is right behind her in second with 1329, while 2004 Olympian Jennifer Nichols (Cheyenne, Wyo.) continues to hold third place with 1309.
Seven-time National Target Champion Cousins took over the lead today for the compound men with a score of 1397. Logan Wilde (Pocatello, Idaho) is close behind in second place with 1396. Jedd Greshock (Shenandoah, Pa.) is in third place with a score of 1395.
Van Natta set an unofficial 144-arrow FITA Round world record today with a score of 1402 and continues to hold the top spot for the compound women. Mary Zorn (College Station, Texas) set the previous record of 1401 at the 2003 National Target Championships in Reading, Pa. Jahna Davis (Helena, Mont.) remains in second place for the compound women with a score of 1383, while Sandra Swirles-Duncan (Romulus, Mich.) is in third place with 1365.
On the Paralympic side, 2004 Paralympic bronze medalist Jeff Fabry (Tulare, Calif.) is once again in the lead for the AR-1 male compound category with a score of 1362. Chuck Lear (Lee’s Summit, Mo.), a 2004 Paralympic Team member, is in third with 807. Kevin Stone (Kodak, Tenn.), Fabry’s 2004 Paralympic team bronze medal teammate is in first place in the AR-2 male recurve category with 1126.
Lindsey Carmichael (Lago Vista, Texas), a 2004 Paralympian, remains in 23rd place in the Senior women’s recurve category with a score of 1173 and is also in first place in the AR-Standing female recurve category.
Janice Walth (Lodi, Calif.), who is the first ever blind archer to compete at a U.S. National Championships, ended the day with a score of 680 in the visually impaired (VI) compound bow category.
National Championship competition continues tomorrow for all categories including men’s and women’s recurve, compound, barebow and crossbow along with youth recurve and compound. The Championships consist of two full FITA rounds to determine the U.S. National Champions on Friday. The 10th Annual U.S. Open a head-to-head elimination round or Olympic Round (OR) on Saturday, August 5 will feature the top 64 qualifiers from each division shooting the adult distances. This OR competition is the same format used during the Olympic Games. The U.S. Open features both U.S. and foreign competitors.
The 2006 Jr. World Team Trials are also being held in conjunction with the National Championships and will conclude on Sunday, August 6 with the top 64 junior and cadet finishers from the Nationals Championships competing in round robin match play. The Jr. World Trials will decide the team for the 2006 Junior World Championships in Mexico this October.
