Athlete Spotlight: USA Archer Lindsay Pian

Lindsay Pian (Scottsdale, Ariz.) isn't robbing from the rich and giving to the poor, she won't be shooting an apple off of any one's head anytime soon and don't look for any sort of goofy outfit - this modern day Robin Hood does however, have her sights locked for success at the hands of a helpless target standing over 220 feet away.

In a mental game of skill and coordination, where the ultimate aim is consistency, Pian looks to point her bow and arrow in the direction of her long-term bulls-eye - Beijing, China.

From the looks of it, it appears she has the Olympic Games correctly aligned in her sights.

Pian was named to the 2005-06 USA Archery All-American Team based upon her combined Indoor Nationals and United States Intercollegiate Archery Championship (USIAC) scores.

At the Indoor Nationals, Pian won the national title with a score of 1124, her first win in the senior level division.  That score also secured a national title for Pian in the Female College Recurve category.  At the USIAC, she took home the gold after defeating 2004 Paralympian Lindsey Carmichael (University of Texas) 104-98 in the finals.

Most recently, she took the championship recurve title at the 2006 Gold Cup, a United States Archery Team qualifying tournament held June 2-4 in Bloomfield, N.J.

"I've been really happy with my 2006 performances," she said.

Because of her performance at the USIAC, Pian will represent the U.S. at the upcoming World University Championships, June 12-18, in Vinicne, Slovakia.

"I was actually very happy to be named to the team," said Pian.  "It was one my goals for the year that I had been practicing for.  I gave myself every opportunity to make that team and I did.  I've never been to Slovakia before, or even in that region, so I think it will be interesting.  I think its going to be a really good time and I hope to shoot a really good score."

Since 2002, Pian has been shooting ?good scores' at the hands of young archers everywhere as a four time junior U.S. Archery Team member, winning a combined seven outdoor and indoor national titles.

By 2004, the young Robin Hood - rather Pian, would be looking to steal gold at the Olympic Trials.  Instead, she would place 16th.

"I was really young," she said.  "I was still pretty new to it and I didn't really know what was going on."

Pian has come along way since discovering the sport in 1999 at a Girl Scout camp, rising up the ranks through the Arizona Junior Olympic Archery Development (JOAD) program, which she credits as very instrumental to her success.

Now, at 19 years old, Pian has continued to build on her experience and knowledge of the sport with her coach Mark Penaz, the 2005 USA Archery National Coach of the Year, while also receiving the guidance of Mr. Kisik Lee, a six time Olympic coach for Korea and the recently appointed USA Archery National Coach.

The advice of her coaches is absorbed and quickly put to use by Pian, who states that general coachability is a vital aspect to her sport.

"Usually, I train based on what my goal is for that day," she said.  "If my goal is to have ten perfect shots, then however long that takes me.  Sometimes, I will only have an hour in-between two activities I need to get done, so I'll shoot for an hour.  I usually never shoot just to say ?I want to shoot a hundred arrows today.'  But I'll shoot to the point where it's like ?okay, I think I've practiced enough for today to get whatever skill I needed to be resolved."'

When she is not resolving her skills with a bow and arrow, look for Pian to be solving her way through college.

A student of Arizona State University, this mathematics major has put one year of college underneath her belt, with an apparent eye for the classroom as well.

Due to her excellence in archery and with a G.P.A. above 3.0, Pian was announced as a 2005-06 Archery Collegiate Academic All-American on May 15.

When she's not knocking down the competition on the field or in the classroom, Pian is assisting the Sun Devil Archery Program regain its footing.

As Vice President of the ASU Sun Devil Archery Club, she assists Arizona State University Archery in bringing back the winning tradition of old.

Archery ceased to be a NCAA sport at ASU in the early ?90's, but not before the program had won more national titles (men's archery 15 times, women's archery 21 times, and mixed archery 20 times) than any other athletic group at ASU, while additionally boasting numerous World and Olympic team members and medalists.

Pian looks to add to the list containing the names of ASU Olympic archers such as 1996 individual and team gold medalist, Justin Huish.

"My long term goal is to make the 2008 Olympic Team," she said.  "And to just train really intensely between then and now."

While she doesn't look to be stealing from the rich and giving the poor, gold is certainly on this archers mind.  Time will only tell if Lindsay Pian can continue to build on her early success, but all indications certainly seem to be in sight for a clear, perfect shot.
