COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The U.S. Olympic Committee today named figure skater Sasha Cohen and skier Bode Miller as its March Athletes of the Month. The USOC Team of the Month honor was awarded to the 2005 Men's Compound Archery Team.
Cohen (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) won her second consecutive silver medal at the World Figure Skating Championships, beating 40 other ladies from 34 countries. She was the only repeat medalist in the ladies' and men's fields. At the Marshall's U.S. Figure Skating Challenge, she placed second in a rematch of the U.S. Championships.
Miller (Franconia, N.H.) brought the overall World Cup title back to the U.S. for the first time in 22 years, as he remained victorious at the World Cup Finals in Lenzerheide, Switzerland. He led the season total by 194 points over Austrian Benjamin Raich. Miller also won the super G title and two silver medals, in downhill and giant slalom. Miller was only three points behind Raich in the race for the GS title. Reo Wilde (Pocatello, Idaho), Dave Cousins (Standish, Maine) and Rob Menzer (Sheboygan, Wis.) defeated Italy to win gold at the 2005 World Indoor Championships. In their quarterfinal match against Great Britain, the team shot a score of 269 points out of a possible 270 to beat the previous record of 267.
Second place for the women went to skier Hannah Kearney (Norwich, Vt.). Kearney contributed to the U.S. gold medal sweep at the Freestyle Championships moguls contest in Ruka, Finland. She nailed her first jump with a backflip and iron cross and her second with a heli-x off the bottom air. It was the first time in six years that an American woman claimed moguls gold.
Archer, Mary Zorn (College Station, Texas) placed third in the women's vote. Zorn claimed the individual gold medal in female senior compound at the 2005 World Indoor Championships, beating Fatima Agudo of Spain, and set a new 36-arrow finals world record of 356 out of a possible 360.
Second place in the men's ballot went to track and field athlete Kerron Clement (Gainesville, Fla.). He won the 2005 NCAA Indoor 400-meter title with a time of 44.57 seconds, breaking the world record time of 44.63 set by Michael Johnson. Clement later anchored the University of Florida's 4x400M relay team that won the national title and set a new collegiate record-time of 3:03:51.
Reo Wilde finished third in the vote. Wilde was the only archer at the 2005 World Indoor Championships to successfully defend his title. He defeated Sweden's Morgan Lundin to take home the gold in male senior compound. Wilde also won gold in the team event.
Ice dancing pair Tanith Belbin (Kingston, Ontario, Canada) and Ben Agosto (Chicago, Ill.) took second place in the team vote. Belbin and Agosto won the silver medal at the 2005 World Figure Skating Championships, the first World ice dancing medal for the U.S. in 20 years and the first World silver medal in 30 years. By placing second, they helped secure three ice dancing spots for the U.S. at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games, the first time the U.S. will send three teams to an Olympic Winter Games since 1984. They skated to a personal best final score of 221.26.
Finishing in third on the ballot was curling's Cassie Johnson rink. Cassie Johnson (Bemidji, Minn), Jamie Johnson (Bemidji, Minn), Jessica Shultz (Duluth, Minn), Maureen Brunt (Portage, Wis.) and Courtney George (Duluth, Minn) finished the World Championships with an 11-2 record and the silver medal in their first appearance. They were ranked No. 1, statistically, after the round-robin. Each team member also ranked No. 1 at their respective position. The team earned the No. 2 seed for the play-offs and beat the No. 1 team in the first semifinal, but then lost to that team in the Championship final.
